How It Works

The AI Readability Analyzer applies four established readability formulas to your text. Flesch Reading Ease (206.835 - 1.015×W/S - 84.6×Syl/W) produces a 0-100 score. Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level converts this to a US grade level. Gunning Fog estimates years of education needed, and SMOG Index evaluates polysyllabic word density.

A built-in syllable counter uses vowel-grouping rules to accurately count syllables for English text, identifying complex words (3+ syllables) that impact readability scores.

Frequently Asked Questions

Scores typically range from 0-100. 60-70 is considered 'plain English' and easily understood by 13-15 year olds. Scores above 80 are very easy to read (conversational), while scores below 30 are very difficult (academic/technical). Most professional content aims for 50-70.
It depends on your audience. Flesch Reading Ease is great for general readability. Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level is widely used in education and government. Gunning Fog is excellent for business and journalism. SMOG Index is ideal for healthcare content. Using all four gives you a comprehensive picture.
Use shorter words and sentences, avoid jargon, break long paragraphs into smaller ones, use bullet points and headings, prefer active voice over passive voice, and keep sentences under 20 words when possible. Aim for your target grade level and adjust based on your audience.
